The Remswelle project
Citing and reusing this site
Much of remswelle.de is work nobody else has done: thirty years of surfable days on the Rems, the terrain-model analysis of the Hungerberg, the cistern paradox, the maps of Winterbach. We want it to be reused – by newsrooms, schools, clubs, local authorities and anyone interested in river waves, the Rems or Winterbach. So that nobody has to guess whether they may, here is what applies.
In short: Quoting and linking is always welcome. Our own charts, analyses and data are licensed under CC BY 4.0. Photos are available through the press pack.
Charts, analyses and data: CC BY 4.0
Our own diagrams, schematics, infographics, calculations and data tables (downloadable CSV files) are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) (opens in a new tab). You may copy, distribute, adapt and use them commercially – in a newspaper article, a worksheet, a presentation to a council – as long as you credit the source and indicate changes.
Every figure states what applies to it. Where it says “CC BY 4.0”, that licence applies. Where there is only a source line, the figure is built on third-party data (see next section).
Maps and analyses built on third-party data
Many of our maps and relief images rest on official or open data: aerial images, cadastral maps and terrain models from the State Office for Geoinformation and Rural Development of Baden-Württemberg (Data licence Germany – attribution 2.0), OpenStreetMap maps (ODbL), environmental data from the LUBW information system, weather data from the German Meteorological Service (CC BY 4.0), elevation data from the Copernicus programme. These data come with their own terms, and those remain in force. You may reuse such figures if you carry over the complete source line beneath the figure – it names the data providers the way their licences require. The gauge and discharge data from the Baden-Württemberg flood forecasting centre that feed our wave forecast are not passed on; the raw data are available from the LUBW.
Texts: quote and link
Quotations from our texts with attribution and a link are expressly welcome – within what quotation rights allow anyway, and generously so. Please ask before reproducing whole pages or sections: our texts contain assessments we have worded carefully, and we do not want edited versions circulating under our name. For teaching and talks, a quick question is quickly answered.
Photos, visualisations and logo
Photos are not under a free licence – many show members of our initiative. For press and education we provide an image pack (opens in a new tab): visualisations, photos, maps and historic aerial photos with captions and the respective credits; its contents may be used in connection with reporting on or presenting the Remswelle. For other purposes or further images, write to us.
AI-generated illustrations are labelled as such on the site; anyone reusing them must keep the label. The logo, the wave mark, the “Surf the Rems” lettering and the comic character Anna are marks of the initiative and not for free use.
How to cite
For references we recommend this pattern – it takes readers straight to the page:
Remswelle initiative (2026): The flow of the Rems – surfable days 1996–2025. remswelle.de, https://remswelle.de/en/river-flow-and-surfable-days/ (accessed DD Month YYYY)
Short form for captions and footnotes: Remswelle initiative – remswelle.de. For figures built on third-party data, add the figure's source line.
Higher resolution, raw data, charts on request
Most figures open at full size when clicked, and data tables sit as CSV files next to the analyses. If you need a chart at higher resolution, without labels, as a print file or cropped to a section, write to info@remswelle.de – we are glad to provide it for press, schools, clubs and local authorities.
And: we are happy to hear where our work has ended up. Not as a condition, but because we like to see what it is used for. → Press information · → Imprint (German)
Frequently asked questions
May I print a chart from remswelle.de in a newspaper article?
The initiative's own charts and diagrams: yes, under CC BY 4.0 with the credit “Remswelle initiative – remswelle.de”. Maps built on official or OpenStreetMap data: yes, with the figure's complete source line. Photos: via the image pack with the credits stated there.
May I process the surfable-days data or other CSV files further?
Yes. Our analyses and data tables are licensed under CC BY 4.0. Third-party raw data (such as LUBW gauge readings) remain subject to the provider's terms; the origin is stated in the file or on the page it belongs to.
May I reproduce a whole article, for example for a school project?
Please ask briefly – for teaching and talks we practically always say yes. Without asking: quoting and linking yes, copying whole texts no.
Do I have to tell you when I use something?
No. But we are glad to receive a short note at info@remswelle.de.
